Keratosis Pilaris

Signs and Symptoms of Keratosis Pilaris (KP)

Keratosis Pilaris is a skin condition caused by the accumulation of dead skin (keratin) around hair follicles. The propensity toward KP may be inherited. More often than not, you’ll feel KP before you see it. You can most commonly find it over the outer upper arm and outer upper thighs. If you raise your arms and turn them slightly you’ll be able to see the rough, almost goose-bump-like raised papules. The fine bumps, typically the size of grains of sand, can be the color of your skin or slightly red in appearance. The condition is generally worse in the winter and often clears in the summer. It is self-limiting and disappears with age. The doctor can diagnose the condition easily during a physical exam.
