Nail Care

Many occupational positions and medical conditions can affect the tone, shape or texture of the fingernails. Brittleness is when the nails easily become thin, can peel off, easily crack or chip, and can split when barely tapped. This can be caused simply by aging, as a response to the long-term use of polish, or with exposure to moist conditions (including frequent hand washing, swimming or dish washing). Some diseases are also associated with changes in the nail and nail plate, which can include brittleness.  Thyroid disease can cause thin, brittle nails and hair. The term onychoschizia refers to splitting of the fingernails as well as brittle or soft nails. Taking a vitamin supplement such as Biotin, can help in some cases of brittle nails, and application of moisturizers such as Night Time Dream Cream, after soaking in water can also be of benefit.
