SmartLipo™ with Tumescent Technology
We perform all liposuction procedures using SmartLipo™ and Tumescent technology. This combination of technology enables patients to see better results with a safer, quicker, and more cost-effective method. SmartLipo™ is designed to remove that stubborn, unwanted fat that doesn’t seem to go away. This procedure can be performed on most areas including: under the chin, arms, abdomen, flanks, back, thighs, around the knees, and the gluteal region. Many pair SmartLipo™ with the Fat Transfer procedure, designed to fill and plump areas such as the gluteal region, deep scars, or the breast area.
About the Procedure
SmartLipo™ with Tumescent technology is performed in our office operating rooms at Physicians Aesthetics. The patient is under conscious sedation with the use of tumescent technology to locally numb the area. This technique utilizes fluids and diluted lidocaine to fill and expand the fat compartment. This injected solution also contains epinephrine, which forces the small blood vessels to constrict so that there is minimal to no bleeding during the procedure.
This technique increases the margin of safety, improves the safety of large volume liposuction, greatly reduces the risk of surgical blood loss, decreases the likelihood of surface (skin) irregularities and eliminates the risk involved with general, intubated anesthesia. Small incisions are made for the cannula to enter. SmartLipo™ laser system uses a carefully calibrated laser to liquefy fat deposits through the top layers of the patient’s skin. The laser actually ruptures fat cells, and the surgeon removes the resulting oily, liquid substance through the tiny incision in the skin.
The small laser can also seal blood vessels as it zaps fat, so there is less swelling, bleeding, and bruising than with traditional liposuction. The minimally invasive aspect of the procedure allows patients to see faster results and experience fewer complications. Furthermore, it is uncommon in our clinic to see complications from this procedure.
Absorption pads cover the incisions to absorb the drainage, which usually lasts one day. The patient then has instructions to wear a compression garment during the healing time and give the treated areas needed support. Additionally, the patient will wear the garment for several weeks. Typically, the patient feels well enough to go out in public the next day. Dr. Atkins has been doing this procedure for a decade and most patients who have had the procedure refer their friends and family.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the downtime with this procedure?
A: Downtime is minimal due to the less invasive nature of SmartLipo™. Most people have the procedure on a Thursday or Friday and return to work the following Monday. In addition, you may resume exercise within a few days after surgery.
Q: What will happen to any excess skin?
A: Skin is a dynamic organ whose elasticity enables it to adjust to the new body contour. The SmartLipo™ laser along with the Power Assisted Lipo handle enhances skin tightness during the procedure. After the procedure we perform certain laser treatments in order to enhance the skin’s ability to “snap” back.
Q: Can I afford the procedure?
A: Insurance policies do not cover cosmetic surgery. Therefore, you will need an in-office consultation to determine the exact cost of the procedure. Contact our office for details on payments and payment options.
