Women's Top 5 Health Concerns

Imagine living without illness to slow you down. While there are no lifetime guarantees, enough scientific research has been done to make long, healthy living a possibility.  Everyday in clinic, Dr. Debra Atkins will talk with women not only about their wrinkles and skin, but about their overall health.  This is why she is known as the girl friend’s doctor.

To help women boost health, we examined five medical conditions that are of great concern to them:

    1. Heart disease
    1. Breast cancer
    1. Osteoporosis
    1. Depression
  1. Autoimmune diseases

We looked at the risk factors for each disease and asked the experts what women could do to prevent such ailments.  Exercise, sleep, eating well and of course making sure that you minimize the stress in your life.  All of this is important to maintaining your health.

In order to make full use of this information, Debra Atkins, MD, encourages women and men to take charge of their bodies.   She says we all  need to work in partnership with their doctors by finding out their family medical history, educating themselves on health issues, and paying attention to their bodies.  Even when women transition into menopause, real issues are happening in the body that can be addressed by your doctor.  Make sure that if you are having hot flashes, no sex drive or overall lack of well-being, bring them up.  Many times the medical professional has a tool or two in the toolbox that can help.

“You know what makes you feel good, you know when you don’t feel well. Understanding your body is key,” says Mark, senior medical adviser for the Office on Women’s Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
